I have been keen to try out all the brightly coloured silcone cookware in the shops for ages now. I couldn’t resist the temptation of pink and blue moulds for people shaped cakes.
Little M and I tried them out yesterday. For the two moulds it recommends using a one egg mixture but that wouldn’t have been enough in this household so I used a two egg mixture.
I made five little people with this but I could have made six.
I used Nigella Lawson‘s Fairy Cake recipe from her ‘How to be a domestic goddess’ book – I love it for it’s ease and speediness. I’ve probably made thousands of these cakes over the years. They’re always perfect.
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 12
- 125g softened unsalted butter
- 125g caster sugar
- 125g self raising flour
- 2 eggs
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- Preheat oven to 200ºC/gas mark 6
- Put all the ingredients except for the milk into a food processor and blitz until smooth. Add the milk down the funnel whilst pulsing to make a soft dropping consistency.
- Easy Peasy!!
- If doing in the traditional way, cream the butter and sugar, add the vanilla and then the eggs one at a time adding a spoonful of flour each time. Fold in the remainder of the flour, then add the milk.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until cooked and golden.
I was a bit disappointed with the cake people- they had wrinkly pot bellies quite similar to their maker. If I was doing them for a party I would have cut the excess cake off to make a flat surface but I left the bellies- more cake to eat! The cakes came out of the moulds very easily.
I did notice that the cake surfaces in contact with the silicone were shiny.
We decorated them in glace icing ( icing sugar mixed with water) Little M then decorated them with balls and things! I think he was eating more than went on the cakes!
Can you guess which cake was mine? The control freak in me had to ignore what was going on with the rest of them. Little M had great fun!
Needless to say, the cake people were all gone within a couple of hours!
The moulds can be bought at Lakeland for £4.99
We will definitely be making lots more of these.
Wow I love to bake, cake men never occured to me! yum yum I must try this recipe out soon, Little M looks like he had as much fun making the cakes as he did eating them!
.-= Are we nearly there yet?´s last blog ..What is your Magic-scope? =-.
Those look so yummy. Now I want cake.
They were lovely I must admit…but then I can never resist a home-made cake with lots of icing on! :0)
They’re great aren’t they. So many more lovely ones out there too. ;0)
Wow, I am inspired! Firstly I never thought to mix cake mixture in a blender. I alway use a bowl and a wooden spoon. And secondly I never thought to make fairy cakes in anything but paper cake cases. I just love these moulds!!
