Do we really want role models like these for our children?

I have to admit to being sick and tired of hearing stories about John Terry, England’s football team captain. Even GMTV was interviewing his friend this morning for the second time this week.  Pleeease! These people should be banned from having media coverage…he’s just another overpaid self- gratifying footballer. His wife must be distraught…and having to deal with this being plastered all over the news can only heighten the pain.
There are all manner of people ready to defend people like John Terry, Tiger Woods, it’s to do with power…people find power so attractive, blah, blah…does that give them the right to cheat on their wives? For women to be attracted to someone’s husband and encourage them to cheat? Should they be plastered all over the papers and television like a hero? No! My opinion is that John Terry should no longer be England’s captain….it is sending out the wrong message to all of our children ” You can do what you like, hurt whoever you want to because it makes no difference, it doesn’t matter…pat on the back!” It is not only children that are influenced by all this hype though…it is other husbands that think ‘well if he can do it and get away with it then so can I’….and other wives that think ‘well she didn’t make a fuss, maybe this is what I have to accept…’
For the sake of his family, this should have been dealt with discreetly, there really is no need for us to know about it, I don’t particularly want my children exposed to this type of news.
Yes, I know that these stories sell papers but surely the media should be finding positive role models…people that have saved the world, worked to better our lives….all probably for pittance too.
Unfortunately I’m sure John Terry will come out of this smelling of roses eventually.

What is it about Chelsea football players at the moment? Do a search on Chelsea players and all manner of posts come up about cheating husbands/boyfriends…..and they are all household names.
Only last week Ashley Cole, another Chelsea footballer ( not ganging up on Chelsea, honestly!) was convicted for driving his Lamborghini at 104 mph in a 50mph zone at midday.

Midday?! So would he still be appealing if he had knocked down and killed someone? Would he still blame the photographers chasing him as mitigating circumstances? why can’t he just hold up his hands and say, ” I was wrong, I shouldn’t have done that, whatever the circumstances. I accept my punishment. It won’t happen again.” Of course he can’t, we seem to live in a blameless society….this is very worrying, the criminals are now becoming victims. What he should be doing is campaigning for road safety, show that this isn’t the way to behave. What is he doing though? Well for a start he didn’t even attend court, oh no, he’s far too superior for that. Then…..his barrister asked on his behalf for time to pay his £1000 fine. He earns £100,000 a week!!!

And then we come on to Katie…..dear Katie Price AKA Jordan. Today’s latest news plastered everywhere among the John Terry sleaze , is that she has wed in Las Vegas. Yes, she has married her boyfriend of seven months Alex Reid. What is she doing? She’s not free and single, she has three very young children . I used to admire her quietly, admire her for her business sense not the way she initially made her money. Now I have to say the way she has behaved since she and her ex-husband Peter Andre split up is questionable. Call me cynical but as far as I am aware, I don’t make a habit of keeping up to date with her movements, she had split up with this latest boyfriend before Christmas. He then won Celebrity Big Brother last week? They got married yesterday.
I hope it really was for life, and not for publicity. There are three little children to think about.

  4. It scares the life out of me who young people have to look up to today. It's all about fame and money, nothing else matters.

  5. I am with you all the way here. My son asked "Is it a crime to have an affair?" and I told him that yes it was, against his family, his wife and children who should matter the most in his life it is a crime of betrayal. He should be honourable and resign as he is no role model xxx Fantastic post x
Katy Price .. I have no words for.. Team Peter all the way x

  6. Harro! Came here via Twitter thanks for @Tara_cain and @LauraAWNTYM. I had exactly the same conversation with my two boys 9aged 11 and 15) last night. They're sad that every one of their role models ends up behaving badly. My youngest said: 'first there was David Beckham, and now this – are there any nice famous Daddies?'.

So I'm on a mission now to find, and bring attention to, the good ones. xx

  7. You are totally right with all of this. I'm sick of hearing about them all. I also used to respect Katie Price and got slated for sticking up for her. It's quite hard now to defend her actions as everything just smacks of a publicity stunt. She's a usually savvy woman but she just seems desperate now.

How are our children expected to find good role models when people like these are plastered all over our papers every day? I think I'll be keeping tabloids out of the house for a good few years.

  8. I was having a conversation with my 7 year old this morning about wages and jobs. I told him what footballers earned compared with say a nurse or a fireman and he said; "That's just wrong isn't it? I'd much rather have a job I'm proud of."
Out of the mouth of babes eh?
Thankfully my children don't know who any of these people are and I hope to keep it that way. It's a scary thought the number of youngsters growing up thinking these individuals are to be admired.
Trouble is, the public have put them up there in their ivory towers and they do believe they are above the 'normal' rules of society.
