I do like my wine and was delighted to have the opportunity to review some from Aldi.

First up I tried Grapevine Merlot a red wine from Spain. Merlot is probably one of my favourite reds so I was keen to see what this was like. I was not disappointed, it is very fruity, I thought I could taste berries but it is made with plums, blackcurrants and black cherries. It has a high alcohol content at 12.5% of which I was surprised because it felt very light for a red wine. I really enjoyed this and would buy it myself but what I was most amazed about is the price, £3.29 a bottle. I honestly cannot believe it, a bargain for such an easy drinking wine. I highly recommend this.

Next I tried Freeman’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2013. Sauvignon Blanc is one white that I would normally choose to drink. I loved the colour of this, very nearly colourless, I can’t stand drinking white wine that is yellow as it reminds me of something else…cough. This is very very fruity, again very light but lively. It was just ever so slightly too acidic for me, however I still drank it. It is made with gooseberry, lime zest and passion fruit and I could definitely taste the lime zest. I was shocked to discover this had an alcohol content of 13% which is very high, I would never had guessed this as it was so light. Again at just £5.79 a bottle it is good value for money, I would recommend it to anyone that likes really fruity wine.

The Exquisite Collection Limestone Coast Chardonnay from Australia is priced at £5.99. It has an alcohol content of 13.5%. This is a very intense wine and I found it a little heavy. To be fair I am not usually a Chardonnay fan so it could have been my palette. Although it is dry it is very very fruity, I couldn’t pick any out in particular but it a blend of honeysuckle, white peach and pineapple.

The Philippe Michel Cremant du Jura 2011 is a sparking Chardonnay. At first I was not sure but this grew on me and it is absolutely lovely, so crisp and refreshing and the bubbles delicately popped on my tongue. This is a really lovely sparkling wine, definitely one for warm summer days or special occasions and celebrations and at just £6.99, that’s right £6.99 a bottle it is a bargain. I could taste the apples in this and really do recommend it. It’s alcohol content is 12%.

Lastly we have the Andara Chilean Merlot. This was a lot drier than the other Merlot I tried. The red fruits could be tasted and I could even detect a hint of chocolate, it doesn’t mention oak at all but to me it tasted slightly oaky. This bottle is another bargain at just £3.99 a bottle. I preferred the Spanish Merlot to this one but I would still recommend it if you like heavier wines.

Well this has certainly changed my perception of which wines to buy in the future, I am especially impressed with the Grapevine Merlot and the Philippe Michel Cremant du Jura and will be seeking out my nearest Aldi, I can’t believe how good value they are for money.
