Apparently my daughter is strange, which means I am strange and probably both my sons too………you see we don’t watch soaps. We don’t watch Eastenders…*gasp*, or Coronation Street….”What?!” do I hear you cry? We really don’t watch any soaps at all. Are we strange? Are we missing out on anything? As we were eating dinner the other day Big C announced that her friends at school think it is strange that she doesn’t watch soaps, she’s eleven and I’m pretty sure I was watching Eastenders and Coronation Street at the age of eleven. My Nan always watched Coronation Street, so it’s always been there……but was it more innocent then?

I can’t remember when I stopped watching soaps……..it was sometime after Big H was born, I think I got fed up with being tied to watching something so often…..life and evenings revolving around it, dictating how the evening would start. Then when the stories became more and more depressing…well I think that was it. I would also get frustrated with the storylines….either so predictable or just extremely over the top. People screaming at each other, stabbing each other in the back….I felt uncomfortable watching it. I would feel uncomfortable watching now with the children….I think the story lines are on the whole unsuitable for children….or am I just shielding the children from real life? Doing more harm? Closing doors of opportunities for ‘heavy’ talks about ‘real’ life? It’s not as though they’ve asked to watch them…..I haven’t banned them or anything, I just don’t have them on.

So…..are we strange? What do you think?

  1. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I remember when I was at school everyone used to watch Neighbours and Home and Away because they were on before or after dinner time. But Eastenders and Corrie. I have never watched Corrie or Emerdale ever. I watch Eastenders now and again but it’s a tv show for crying out loud. Now people who don’t watch Vampire Diaries, they are weird 🙂 x

  2. You’re not strange at all, I used to watch several soaps (Enders, Brookside and I also loved Dallas and Dynasty in those by gone days!) but gradually the ones I liked disappeared and I finally stopped watching East Enders as I got tired of being strung along for months watching characters get together only to see perfectly happy relationships pulled apart for the sake of storyline. I have a passing interest in the front covers of the magazines and find this is enough to know what’s going on without wasting time watching. I don’t mind seeing EastEnders about once a month but I would never get sucked into watching it regularly like I used to.

  3. Definitely not strange. I have zero interest in soaps, don’t interest me in the slightest! Gimme some proper comedy, realistic drama or decent documentary any day!

  4. Without a doubt you are not strange. I don’t do the “soaps” either (although most of our soaps are on in the middle of the day….but there are a few evening ones). In fact, I don’t do much in the way of tv at all. So, I wouldn’t call you strange – I’d call you enlightened!

  5. Nope, we don’t watch the soaps either. Real life can be challenging enough without tuning in for a daily dose of make believe misery! And, shock horror, we don’t watch x-factor either which I guess makes us the weirdest household in the UK 🙂

  6. Not strange, just protecting the innocents of your innocents! We just brushed up on the sixth commandment, which taught my little ones about purity…in mind and dress, in what we watch and listen to.

  7. I never used to watch soaps until I moved in with Gary – he religiously watches Coronation Street. I will sit and watch it but it in no way enhances my life lol… I’d rather read a good book! Plus if I miss a few episodes it’s always so easy to catch up again!

  8. I too do not watch soaps, in fact I watch less TV in general now than I ever have. I used to watch the soaps and so much so when ‘S’ was born he used to recognise the theme tunes from a very young age lol.
Like you, I can’t remember when I stopped watching them either or why but I know that I have no intention of tuning back in! ‘S’ is now nearly 14 and watches Eastenders and Corrie religiously but we make him watch them upstairs (is that really bad?). I really can’t be doing with all the shouting and drama to be quite honest with you. I’d much rather sit in the lounge with my laptop, music playing and a nice glass of wine 🙂
