Part of summer involves playing outside, splashing in paddling pools, building sandcastles, going for long walks….but what happens if your child is seemingly allergic to every sun screen available….

Unfortunately my children have inherited my pale skin….we all know that children should be well covered up in the sun but without suncream it is virtually impossible for it to be safe. When my eldest son was little there were no sunsuits available, or if they were they weren’t widely available. Nightmare senario one- Big H was allergic to every suncream we tried…..his body would itch, he would get covered in a terrible rash and his face would even swell. Sometimes I would find a cream that he was okay with and then the next season he would be allergic to it…..in the end I would dread the sun coming out and our first holidays abroad with him were disasters, became impossible and not worth the pain. I didn’t get much joy from doctors either….he was allergic to the prescribed creams and I was told to just keep him out of the sun. Not so easy when you have a lively toddler who attended nursery school.

I did a lot of research…”find a cream without this ingredient in it, or this one, or how about this one?” We spent a fortune on the most expensive creams trying to find a solution. Then several years later, and two more children added to the mix, I read an article in a parenting magazine about an all day sun lotion, Parasol 25+ by Irish skin care, that was good for people with sensitive skins. At the time it seemed so expensive but I ordered my first bottle, as far as I am aware it is still only available online. Well, what a find…..my son was not allergic to it and we have now been using it for years…. In actual fact it works out as a very economical lotion as it goes a long way and doesn’t need to be reapplied throughout the day although when we’ve been in absolutely blistering temperatures near the equator I have topped up after lunch especially when the children have been swimming all day. This lotion does not strip the skin either like some all day ones that I’ve used in the past. It is also a brilliant solution now that the children cannot have cream put on by teachers at school.

Unfortunately this lotion is only suitable for over twos……a warning, it stings like hell if you get it in your eyes as well. This is not a sponsored post I wanted to share this to help anyone else struggling to find a sunscreen if they have a child with ultra sensitive skin.

  4. Great tip! My daughter has lovely olive skin (which I, sadly, don’t share) but it’s incredibly sensitive and even organic sunscreens make her break out with eczema. I’ll definitely try this. x
