I’ve mentioned before that Big E, aged twelve, has coeliac disease. I am amazed at how much the the availability of Gluten Free products has increased in the two years since he was diagnosed. There is still a huge lack of products marketed at children- he won’t eat jam tarts, fruit cake, anything that has a hint of fruit or nuts in it so from supermarkets that limits us to special Jaffa cakes and Bakewell tarts. Recently there have been ready made victoria sponge cakes available as well.
Since starting a state school in January I have had to provide Big E with a packed lunch as the school doesn’t provide anything he can eat unless he wants salad- this has increased my food bill by nearly double, gluten free products are astronomical in price. He’s not particularly keen on the bread that he gets on prescription for sandwiches and I don’t blame him. It’s just about palatable if toasted.
On a quick trip to Sainsbury’s the other evening I noticed some Gluten free bagels by Livwell. He loves them, as you can see they look like the ‘real thing’. It really is the first product that I have come across that looks exactly the same as a normal.
Well done! More products like these please. At approximately £2.49 for two though they will have to be for occasional treats.
Actually after doing this post I have just found out that the bagels can now be put on my son’s prescription ( he is allowed a certain number of products a month ) along with a few other products that he likes such as pitta breads and nan bread. Yay!!
Thanks for the good read. I would like to query a couple of things. Can I post here or should I pm you.
Quite right too! I should think they are available on prescription. We’re relatively lucky in that Charlie only has to avoid certain things that he can quite easily do without – namely peanuts, and related products. So feeding him involves no extra expense. Which is quite a good job, given his appetite!

I didn’t realise Charlie had a peanut allergy. That’s a pain, especially as many companies now say ‘may contain’ just to cover their backs.

Glad you can get them on his prescription, why do these things have to be so expensive……

Hi Tamsin, thanks for popping in. I suppose it’s the lack of demand but I would think most people struggle with the prices, it is quite disgusting.
