Oh boy…..we really have to tackle potty training. Little M is two and a half now.
Potty training is one of my parenting pet hates, it comes a close second to weaning onto solids. I don’t know why because I have always been very lucky in the potty training arena. Son number one was out of nappies at two years exactly, son two and daughter one about the same. I never had problems with Little I either. They were all keen to get out of nappies and wear big boys/ girls pants/knickers.
It’s a different story with Little M though. He is not interested at all. He refuses to sit on the potty, rather standing there watching a wee dribble down his legs than even try the potty. I try to get him to use the potty before bath time still no joy!
He sometimes agrees to wear pants….until that first wee wee makes him soaking wet and then it’s back with the nappy on. I’ve tried Thomas the Tank engine pants, trendy pants and now Toy Story pants. Nothing!
It’s funny because we talk about him being a big boy like his older brothers and he says, ” I’m a big boy”” I wear big boy’s pants like….” and then we go through the list of the whole family but on this hurdle he refuses to budge.
I’ve also tried a training seat for the toilet because I remember with one of the others they preferred that to the potty but again, it’s not made any difference.
I’ve read the obligatory potty stories to him, he just laughs.
Maybe it’s me…..maybe he gets the reluctant vibes from me or realises these are half hearted attempts. It’s not exactly a great time to try and potty train, I missed the optimal time in the summer but he seemed so young then. It’s also very difficult when you have to run around a lot picking up and taking the older ones out so much.
It’s funny, being number five, in some ways he seems so grown up. Sometimes I’m aghast at the things he does. In other ways though he is such a little baby, certainly the spoiled baby of the family.
He was reluctant to give up breast feeding too, he was well over two and still points at his ‘milkies’.
So, should I make a ‘real’ conscious effort with potty training or be led by him? If I leave it until the summer he’ll be three then and that seems so late. Even his sisters keep saying to me, “Shouldn’t he be potty trained by now?”
In the meantime our copious potties sit redundant in corners of the house gathering dust until Master ‘This house revolves around me’ Prince decides that he wants to use them!

Hmm, I'm dreading potty training and am planning to let Presley tell me when he's ready!!
I love that photo 🙂
Potty training can be such a trial. They really do pick their own time:) Best of luck!
Man-Child wasn't fully trained until he was 3 – our peditrician told us not to push it and that eventually he'd show interest. I do recall though that once you start you have to keep at it and stay consistent….
I seem to remember me asking you for potty training guidance when I was training A, but I think it finally fell into place after a few days!
It must be really hard for you because of all the going out and in taking/collecting everyone…I guess you'll just have to stick with it and "hope" he changes his mind! Have you tried the wet nappies, so he feels wet rather than the normal nappies?
