A deliciously easy recipe for dairy free scones coming up…
If you don’t love afternoon tea and scones with jam and cream you can’t be my friend any longer! They are my secret indulgence and I’m not ashamed to admit I hide the clotted cream at the back of the fridge for these occasions… (I know I’m a disgusting, awful person). But, today I’m making dairy free scones to be served along with a dairy free milk made from rice and not a lot else; Rice Dream.
- Rice Dream is the original rice drink – first introduced more than 30 years ago.
- Rice milk is allergy free: free from dairy, lactose, soy, gluten, wheat and nut. Rice milk offers a great taste alternative for those unable to tolerate dairy products or other milk alternatives.
- It has no added sugars and contains only naturally occurring sugars from the rice fermentation.
It makes a great change from nut based milks if you can’t have dairy and especially if you can’t eat nuts too and I have to admit it does really taste good in a cup of tea, I can only stomach almond milk in coffee but I am not a fan of it in tea so this is the perfect solution for me.
If you are a bit unsure about rice milk, Dream’s on-shelf ‘try me for free’ campaign are inviting shoppers to discover the great taste of rice milk, by allowing shoppers to get their money back if they don’t enjoy the taste of Rice Dream. But hurry as the promotion will only be available on 120,000 packs. Rice Dream is RRP: £1.50 from Tesco and Asda
Rice Dream is great for cooking too, to show you how good it is I made a really simple plain scone recipe using all dairy free ingredients. I had run out of gluten free flour so they are not gluten free but substitute as required, they’ll still taste great!

Total time:
Serves: 8

- 225g Self Raising Flour (gluten free is necessary)
- 40g Dairy Free Spread
- 20g Caster Sugar
- 120ml Rice Dream, a little more may be needed if using gluten free flour (Milk)
- Flour for dusting
- Preheat the oven to 220ºC/ Gas mark 7
- Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl
- Add the dairy free spread to the bowl and rub into the flour with the tips of your fingers
- Stir in the caster sugar
- Mix in the milk and stir with a spoon until it comes together into a dough (add more milk if necessary, probably a good idea if using gluten free flour)
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll out to a thickness of 3 cm
- Using a 5cm cutter cut out the scones and place on a baking tray lined with baking parchment/greaseproof paper
- Keep rolling the dough until it's all used up, you'll end up with about 8 scones
- dust the scones with flour, this will keep the tops really soft
- Bake in the oven for approximately 12 mins
Dare I ask, how do you eat yours? Cream or jam first? Jam for me…*runs away*

Hey Tories,
It’s ya boy G from the U.S. of A. We are locked down from the COVID so I’ve got some time on my hands. For your other lactose-adverse gringos out there I did the math…
1 3/4 cups white flour + 1 tsp baking powder + 1/2 tsp salt.
3 TBLS of margarine
5 teaspoons of WHITE sugar (what even is caster sugar??)
1/2 cup plus 1/2 TBLS of rice milk (I used almond breeze, sue me )
Too lazy to cut them out so I rolled them into one giant circle and then cut them into 8 triangles…direct action, it beats legislation!
I served them with strong black coffee (but I do like earl grey, sorry Dad)
I paired them with strawberry and blueberry jam because America!
Hi what did you use for the cream I never found double dairy free cream
Before cream made me poorly I was always a cream first girl as, to me, that’s a substitute for butter, and you wouldn’t put jam before butter! 😉 I really fancy making these and risking a tummyache! 🙂
You’re right you wouldn’t! I’m just greedy and like piling the cream up I think! Have you tried whipping coconut cream instead…I know it’s not the same though X
That should have been a five star rating but fat fingers on mobile device only allowed me to press four! Five definitely five! X
Haha, thank you! X
I’m a clotted cream first and jam second cream tea eater. My jam of choice is rose petal and an Earl Grey tea to wash it all down. Bit different isn’t it!
Ooooo, we’ll have to agree to disagree…just seen an article somewhere that I’m right! 😉 Rose petal jam…where can you get that it sounds amazing!! Yes Earl Grey for me too.
