Walkers Shortbread

What every student needs is a constant supply of biscuits and coffee to keep them going in the wee hours whilst deadlines loom…well there has to be some perks surely? To be honest I have been super sonically organised that I actually got my first assignment submitted four days early. Get me.

The downside of focusing purely on the assignment meant that the other module got put aside ( I should have been reading Dr Faustus by Christopher Marlowe, which once deciphered is quite interesting; well the first ten pages I’ve read so far) and now I am slightly behind and have had to skip most of that to start studying Cézanne of which I have an assignment due next week along with one on Antony, of Cleopatra fame. And breathe….can you hear the slight hysteria setting in?

Anyway, a step back, after wondering how on earth I was going to write 750 words on inequalities in City Road, Cardiff, once I put ‘pen to paper’ it was dare I say it quite easy. I will probably live to regret that once I get it back but it felt like a huge achievement and step in the right direction. I was very pleased that I managed to do something that at first I thought was never going to happen.

This is the second week of half term though and I fear I have a long way to go before being ready to write up the two assignments due next week. I am hoping for some last minute inspiration and unexpected insight that isn’t quite there yet.

Anyway, the biscuits…I am not really a biscuit person, most I can take or leave,  but Shortbread is one of the two that gets me everytime…and I’ve been soooo good lately. Walkers kindly sent me a big selection of their Scottish Shortbread, my home baked shortbread doesn’t compare even though Walkers Shortbread only contains flour, butter, sugar and salt! They obviously have the Midas touch when it comes to shortbread.

Walkers ShortbreadThese shortbread really are melt in the mouth with a buttery taste, my favourite are chunky shortbread rounds which have a thistle on them and the shortbread highlanders which are rolled in demerara sugar. Six year old M isn’t picky he likes them all and I’ve had to hide them before he eats the lot.

Some interesting shortbread facts

  • Shortbread first originated in Scotland as biscuit bread dessert.
  • Shortbread is not a cake or a biscuit- it’s a unique confection.
  • As well as the recognisable tartan, every packet of Walkers Shortbread has the images of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald which captures one of the most romantic moments of Scotland’s history.
  • Shortbread fingers have 13 holes, a bakers dozen, ( I’ve never counted them before) to allow the heat from the oven to penetrate the shortbread and bake all the way through.
  • Walkers Shortbread uses the same recipes as used by Joseph Walker over a hundred years ago.

Walkers ShortbreadSo, I fear I may have a few late nights coming up as I attempt to answer the questions and get my assignments in on time, but at least I have a lifetime* supply of biscuits to keep me dying of hunger or low blood sugar whilst I am slogging away. 😉

*Not really a lifetime supply…now that would be amazing but enough for now.

Disclosure: I was sent quite a few packets of Walkers Shortbread, but all opinions are my own.
