Some of my twitter followers will remember that last week I was looking for a gluten free cake for my son’s birthday. It’s not that I don’t make him cakes it was just that I wanted to treat him to one that looked professional and one that you could buy in a shop. He misses all the little treats that you can buy as most gluten free cake products are aimed at adults. There is definitely a market out there for affordable gluten free products for children if anyone is interested. However, when I did a search, I was shocked, it looked as though an iced gluten free cake was going to cost at least £80. No way can I afford that or even give it any consideration, so I planned to make it myself again.

The finished cake! I was quite pleased with how it turned out.

I cannot be bothered to faff around with different flour mixes so this was made with Dove’s gluten free self raising flour following a normal four egg cake mix recipe. I filled it with buttercream and jam and then decorated with icing. It cost a fraction of one that I could have bought and my son, who was fourteen was thrilled with it. The other children enjoyed it too. 😀

  3. That looks like a fab cake and have to say since being gluten free we have had the tastiest birthday cakes. In fact I do gluten free for all the Birthday cakes in our house so I always get a slice (no really my guys enjoy them !)

Chepstow Cupcake Company for the record charge the same for gluten free as there regular ones which I was impressed, but with your beautiful cupcakes you don’t need them but for anyone else who reading may be useful 🙂

    1. Thank you Ali for the company details. I will investigate. Mine will all eat gluten free too but I don’t know why I don’t always make them Gluten free. Will have to get into the habit more.

    1. Oh thanks Susan. I’ve spent a lot of years making birthday cakes. I wish I had time to improve myself on the decorating side. 🙂
