What can I say? We had an invitation to see a special screening of Disney’s film Tangled before Christmas and I have had three very excited children ever since. “When are we going to see Tangled Mummy?” “Is it time to see Tangled yet?” “How many days until we see Tangled?” So the pressure was on for the film to deliver.
Out in the UK on 28th January, Tangled is Disney’s 50th animated film. It is also in 3D.
Tangled is an adaption of the classic Brothers Grimm sinister fairytale Rapunzel. As a tiny baby Princess Rapunzel is snatched from her parents by the evil Mother Gothel for her 70 foot long golden magical hair. Imprisoned for all her life in a tower, as she approaches her eighteenth birthday Rapunzel wants to explore the world outside. That is when the fun starts. The animation was just stunning and the characters beautiful with their big eyes pulling you in. I fell in love with baby Rapunzel, so so cute.
Mother Gothel is the manipulative villain with ulterior motives for raising Rapunzel. I couldn’t help think how hard it must have been for Rapunzel to go against Mother Gothel’s wishes, after all as far as she was aware she was her real mother.
Rapunzel has a friend called Pascal, a little green chameleon, he gives her strength and encourages her to leave the tower.
Flynn Rider is a thief with one mission, to get rich. He is arrogant and totally in love with himself.
Maximus, Captain of the Guards, is a horse with a mission; to capture Flynn Rider.
I think my favourite character was Maximus, he is brilliant. He is so full of character and his dog like behaviour is hilarious! The animosity between Maximus and Flynn is utterly believable. Little M laughed so much at the scenes Maximus was in and also when Maximus and Pascal were ‘sparring’. This definitely appealed to his three year old imagination. I’m not too sure he really understood the rest of the story to keep him fully engrossed in the film but these little snippets kept him watching.
I particularly enjoyed the scene in the Snuggly Duckling pub. To see a weird and wonderful mixture of thugs being charmed by the beautiful Rapunzel and bursting into song in ‘I Have a Dream’ was very catchy and feel good!
Our verdict? We laughed, we cried….yes there were tears. It is sad, scary in places, funny and heartwarmingly cute but I can honestly say we loved it. I think maybe it’s a little over the heads of three year olds though the 3D animation was so convincing I could see Little M reaching out to touch the objects. Big C likened it to Shrek, she has already said we have to get it when it eventually comes out on DVD. It is a beautiful film, I think this will become a classic and one for generations to come.
Thank you to Disney for the invite and for the bags of delights we came away with.
We give this a five out of five cupcake award.
Make sure you are subscribing to the blog as I have an exciting competition of Tangled goodies to give away later this week.
I will also have an Annabel Karmel book giveaway soon. Annabel has a range of healthy snacks using the Disney characters Micky Mouse and Winnie the Pooh.

Am also now following your blog (can’t believe I wasn’t before!) and have tweeted as well
Love Sx
Fab review!! My eldest is called Maximus and this may just persuade him to see what he would class as a “girls film”.
My daughter on the other hand would Love this!
What a great name!! I really wanted to take Maximus home with me. 🙂
I’ve been wanting to take my son to the cinema again, this sounds ideal! Great to know it sounds worth grown ups sitting through!
Oh definitely. Quite grown up in some ways.
A lovely review Nova. You have done the film justice. It
was nice to meet you on Sunday. Mich x
Thank you Mich, was lovely to meet you too. x
Oh good! I am really really pleased you liked it because I really really love a GOOD Disney movie! There’s something comforting as well as entertaining about them. Im a softie, oh well. 🙂
It’s one of those old fashioned Disney films in my opinion but with all the wonders of modern technology. 🙂
This movie sounds great, will be one I shall put on the list for my nephew I think by the sounds of it, he is five and it sounds just the type of disney movie he would love. Glad you all had a good time xx
Thanks Kerry, really recommend it. x
We saw it a few weeks ago and we loved it too! I loved Rapunzel’s reaction when she first escaped the tower! I know just where she is coming from… The whole movie was very beautiful to watch too, the dreamy landscapes, bright flowers and of course the lanterns….magic
I know…there was just so much to write about that was fantastic about it. Very very lovely. x
The movie looks great! Can’t wait until my kids are old enough to drag to the theatre, giving me an excuse! I hereby grant you a Stylish Award! http://richasshole.blogspot.com/2011/01/stylish-and-fancy.html
Definitely! That’s what children are for isn’t it. 😀 I will pop over, thank you.
The more I hear about Tangled the more I can’t wait to see it. It’s planned as a birthday treat for my eldest (and me!)
How exciting! I’d forgotten how good Disney films were. 🙂
I heard that is was really good. The kids have been wanting
to go. I just need to find a quiet afternoon to take them. Thanks
for sharing your thoughts on it.
Oh it is, really is magical. 🙂
We SO want to see this movie….and it’s not just me
pushing the boys. They really DO want to see it!
It really is magical and so beautiful. A good old fashioned Disney film with all the mod cons. 🙂
Got a little worried there when you said ‘over the heads of 3 yr olds’ but then likening it to Shrek made me feel a little better. My 3 yr old loves Shrek so I’m hoping he’ll enjoy this too or at least sit there quietly so I can watch and enjoy ;o)
I always think it’s hard to gauge with really little ones at the cinema isn’t it. They all like different things. I’m sure he will love it. x
When I saw the trailers for this I thought it might be good. Now it seems I will have to borrow a young one to take – since there is no way I can talk M-C into going with me!
I am sure you could sneak in alone! It is very very good…..a good old fashioned story. 🙂
