A deliciously easy recipe for dairy free scones coming up…
If you don’t love afternoon tea and scones with jam and cream you can’t be my friend any longer! They are my secret indulgence and I’m not ashamed to admit I hide the clotted cream at the back of the fridge for these occasions… (I know I’m a disgusting, awful person). But, today I’m making dairy free scones to be served along with a dairy free milk made from rice and not a lot else; Rice Dream.
- Rice Dream is the original rice drink – first introduced more than 30 years ago.
- Rice milk is allergy free: free from dairy, lactose, soy, gluten, wheat and nut. Rice milk offers a great taste alternative for those unable to tolerate dairy products or other milk alternatives.
- It has no added sugars and contains only naturally occurring sugars from the rice fermentation.
It makes a great change from nut based milks if you can’t have dairy and especially if you can’t eat nuts too and I have to admit it does really taste good in a cup of tea, I can only stomach almond milk in coffee but I am not a fan of it in tea so this is the perfect solution for me.

Rice Dream is great for cooking too, to show you how good it is I made a really simple plain scone recipe using all dairy free ingredients. I had run out of gluten free flour so they are not gluten free but substitute as required, they’ll still taste great!
Dairy Free Scones recipe…
- 225g Self Raising Flour (gluten free is necessary)
- 40g Dairy Free Spread
- 20g Caster Sugar
- 120ml Rice Dream, a little more may be needed if using gluten free flour (Milk)
- Flour for dusting
- Preheat the oven to 220ºC/ Gas mark 7
- Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl
- Add the dairy free spread to the bowl and rub into the flour with the tips of your fingers
- Stir in the caster sugar
- Mix in the milk and stir with a spoon until it comes together into a dough (add more milk if necessary, probably a good idea if using gluten free flour)
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll out to a thickness of 3 cm
- Using a 5cm cutter cut out the scones and place on a baking tray lined with baking parchment/greaseproof paper
- Keep rolling the dough until it's all used up, you'll end up with about 8 scones
- dust the scones with flour, this will keep the tops really soft
- Bake in the oven for approximately 12 mins
