I have been a fan of Soho Joe in Dean Street, London for years but now they’ve added a Wagyu burger to their menu…I’ll be there all the time.
When I had an invite to attend the launch of Soho Joe’s brand new menu including the famed Wagyu, I jumped at the chance!
The Wagyu beef for the burgers comes from the black Japanese beef cattle cross breed variety which are raised in the hills of Wales. Living a stress free life, as they approach maturity the cattle sup on the locally brewed Monty’s ale daily and have the occasional massage. This helps to keep the Wagyu calm and avoids stress which can cause tougher meat.
The Wagyu Burger at Soho Joe…
Wagyu beef is famed for its high level of marbling which gives it a distinctive flavour and juiciness, and makes it rich in Omega 3 & 6. It is also good to know that the mono-unsaturated to saturated fat ratio is higher in Wagyu than in other beef. Wagyu is also higher in a type of fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). This has been shown to have potent anti-carcinogenic properties, as well as being an anti inflammatory agent. Research also suggests that feeding grass increases the CLA content of all beef.
The Wagyu burger lived up to my expectations. Served medium rare unless otherwise requested, the burger is served in a brioche bun with salad but nothing else so as to allow the flavours to speak for themselves. Guests were also treated to some Wagyu steak…it melted in the mouth and I’ve been told that Soho Joe will sometimes have a guest steak on the menu too. Lucky for us Monty’s ale is going to be available to drink alongside the burgers and it tastes awesome. It has a wonderful floral hint to it and from someone who doesn’t usually drink beer it went down very nicely, thank you.

Another new item on the menu I had the pleasure of trying was the Funghi pizza, an amazing combination of mushrooms, mozzarella, gruyere and a mouth watering truffle oil. (I need truffle oil in my life every day) Another big hit!
