One of my favourite hotels in London is the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park so I was delighted to attend a special tea, champagne and Chestertons Polo in the Park afternoon in The Rosebery Lounge to celebrate the launch of Chestertons Polo in the Park 2016.
There I was introduced to some of the world’s finest teas, patisseries and champagne by resident Tea Master, Ludo, Executive Chef Patissiere, Heather and a Champagne Lanson connoisseur.Suffice to say it was all exquisite. The attention to detail was obvious and a love of tea and coffee from Ludo (who is Mandarin Oriental’s employee of the year) shone through. He demonstrated the art of traditional Chinese tea brewing before choosing a selection of teas for us to try. The afternoon tea was delicious, gorgeous sandwiches and patisseries which didn’t leave me feeling as though I had over dosed on sugar.
During the afternoon we were joined by Tom Morley, England polo player, and Charlie aka Sharky, half of Sharky & George, the leading A-list children’s party planners who will be returning to Chestertons Polo in the Park, providing a weekend bursting with entertainment for children, and adults who are still big kids at heart.
What is Chestertons Polo in the Park though? It is an annual three-day polo tournament that takes place in June at Hurlingham Park, Fulham. The round-robin style tournament is played under the HPA-endorsed City Polo rules, developed to maximise spectator enjoyment. And that specifically means the whole family, peaking on the Sunday (5th June) for finals day when their will be a pitch invasion ‘with a twist’ thanks to Sharky and George.
Foodies will be well catered for this year though, with the debut of The Great Polo Food Festival!
The Great Polo Food Festival will bring together some of London’s top restaurants and trendiest street food traders to deliver an exceptional culinary experience for spectators attending the event at what’s known as the ‘spiritual home’ of polo. Gordon Ramsay, Mark Hix and Scott Hallsworth will be represented at the event serving bespoke Chestertons Polo in the Park dishes.
London’s famous street food vendors will also be at Hurlingham Park for the event, with the likes of Born & Raised, Le Bun, Smoking Buns, Ceru and Poke bringing hand thrown pizzas, mouth-watering burgers and delights from Hawaii and the Middle East. Furthermore, Bubbledogs will be serving handcrafted hotdogs, famously presented with a glass of Champagne Lanson, the perfect accompaniment to the polo.
