Monsters University

I have just done a search and can you believe that Monsters Inc was released in 2001! 2001?? I can’t quite believe it myself, oh how my life was different then, and I only had three children. That’s twelve years ago…and it is watched so much by my five year old, it certainly doesn’t look or sound that old. It is not at all dated.

So at last, twelve years later we get treated to a prequel with ‘Monsters University’.

For anyone either too young to have never seen Monsters Inc or for it to have totally missed your radar you will have no problem following Monsters University which begins with the Monsters still at school before deciding what they want to be when they grow up. Mike (Voiced by Billy Crystal)  and Sulley (voiced by John Goodman) both want to be Scarers and join Monsters University Elite Scare Programme. Before they can really get going they end up being thrown off the programme and the only hope of getting back on in is by gambling their entire future on a scare competition which they have to win or leave the University completely thanks to the ultimatum given by the very scary Dean Hardscrabble (voiced by Helen Mirren)

With a group of ‘misfits’ Mike and Sulley have to battle against the odds to prove they are the scariest of the scariest and their team mates really are the most unlikely candidates to win.

This film is going to be loved by children, teens, college students, anyone that has ever been to college and fans of the original Monsters Inc. In fact I like this more than the original film. You can even very nearly forget they are ‘Monsters’ as they go through the normal angst that we all go through when growing up. I love the bright colours, the humour, some of which in true Disney style will only be appreciated by adults and I love that this film especially, doesn’t have a really dark side even with the indomitable Dean Hardscrabble. Yes I am one of those people that gets scared at a lot of Disney films.

Oh and the doors,  I can’t not mention the doors which I am pleased to say still feature highly in this film. Anyone that has seen Monsters Inc will know what I mean. 😉

You must go and see this film which opens in the UK on July 12th 2013. For more information go to

  3. Funny, my son just pointed out to me that this film first came out when they were small and then the follow up came as they were all starting out in college. I hadn’t realized it has been that long ago since the Monsters debut! I may have to find a small one to borrow to go see this.
