Serves: 1 loaf/ 6 rolls

Quick, simple recipe for those times when you fancy some fresh bread more or less instantly
  • 380g Plain flour
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ pint / 284ml carton buttermilk or a 300ml carton in which case use 400g flour instead
  1. Preheat oven to 200ºC
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl
  3. Make a well in the centre of the ingredients and pour in the buttermilk
  4. Stir to mix the ingredients bringing them into a dough * You can add grated cheese now for extra flavour if desired
  5. Shape into a round loaf or divide into six round rolls
  6. Slash deep crosses into the loaf or rolls and sprinkle with flour
  7. Place on a floured baking tray
  8. Bake for 30 minutes until they sound hollow when tapped on the bottom
This is very adaptable and works well with wholemeal bread and different ingredients such as cheese, onion, chopped cooked bacon, sundried tomatoes
