If you want to make my day give me flowers. I don’t care if they are a beautiful expensive bouquet or flowers freshly cut from the garden they will never fail to make me smile. Sometimes when I really need a boost and I have the pennies I have
been known to splash out and buy myself some lilies or roses. I only ever buy pink lilies but with roses the colour has to reflect my mood, they will always be either pink, cream or yellow.
However flowers are not just gifts for her, men love them too. Lots of my male friends like receiving flowers and I think often they appreciate them so much because they very rarely get given them. Sadly, it just doesn’t seem to be the done thing.
In Victorian times the rules of etiquette meant that open declarations of love were inappropriate, so flowers were used to do the talking instead. For instance giving red roses means passionate love and red tulips is a declaration of love. Daffodils are for chivalry and pink carnations for gratitude.Sunflowers mean adoration and gladioli shows strength of character.
I have heard that the spontaneous giving of flowers should be encouraged and not left for just birthdays or anniversary gifts. I have to agree, there is nothing better than being given flowers least when you expect it. Friends recently surprised me with a bunch of flowers after I had a tough day, they meant so much and it felt good to know that there were people out there supporting me. Every time I looked at the flowers I was reminded of that.
Lets not forget the smell of flowers either, so potent that they are used in cooking, seduction, healing, for uplifting the mood, for creating a sense of the outdoors, indoors, and so much more.
I have a big birthday this year, did I really say that out loud? I am in denial to say the least but just so you are prepared with your birthday gifts apparently my special birthday flowers (and we all have them) for my birth month July, should be either the Larkspur or the Water Lily. However I’ll forgive anyone for showering me in lilies and roses. Oh hail the mighty power of flowers.

I know my Hubby likes it when I bring home flowers for him….although he probably wouldn’t admit it and would kill me if I had them delivered to his place of business….but flowers really DO put you in a better frame of mind…
They do don’t they. Funnily after I had written this a lovely friend turned up with some flowers for me. So kind and thoughtful of her. x
