Am I a man or a Muppet?

That is the moving question faced by Gary (Jason Segel)and his brother Walter (voiced by Paul Rudd) as they try to save the famous Muppets studio in Los Angeles under threat by the evil Tex Richman (Chris Cooper). In this brand new Muppets film from Disney, Walter and his brother Gary along with Gary’s girlfriend Amy get more than they bargain for when they go on holiday to Los Angeles. Never imagining that he would actually meet Kermit the Frog Walter goes from  dreamer Muppet to hero overnight.

Born in the seventies I was brought up on The Muppets and have fond memories of looking forward I the show each week. I remember being really sad when it ended so I was thrilled to get to get a chance to see this film.

Thanks to Walter’s devotion to his heroes The Muppets, they get to hear of Richman’s plot to drill for oil on the Muppets studio site and hatch a plan to reunite the Muppets for one last special telethon show to raise $10 million. Firstly though Kermit, Walter, Gary and Mary (Amy Adams) have to gather up the Muppets that are scattered around the world.

We get to see Animal in anger management classes with Jack Black, Gonzo as a high class plumber, Fozzie Bear is singing in a band called The Moopets and Miss Piggy is an editor of Vogue in Paris.

Expect to see a host of celebrities pop up throughout the film, I think they must have been queuing up for a cameo role. I won’t spoil the surprise but there are quite a few.

This film is cheesy but in a feel good happy way with the singing and dancing that only Disney can get away with. I found the first half of the film okay but especially loved it when the Muppets show began and I was taken back to my childhood evenings spent watching them. I could hear the adults laughing at the innuendos and Muppet ‘in jokes’ which only people of a certain age would ‘get’ but I think they went over the heads of a lot of the children. The singing and dancing did keep M, aged 4, amused and he has been talking about the film ever since.

I have to admit to feeling quite teary eyed at the end…and it takes a lot.  I really wish they would bring the Muppets show back. Just for me ;)

Overall a great film for Tweens, cool enough for teens and definitely a film for nostalgia seeking 1970′s children.

Go on, watch this video, I defy you not to shed a tear. The film is in UK cinemas 10th February 2012. Join the never ending Mahna Mahna on the official Facebook page.

We give the film a 3.5/5 cupcakes award

I’m sure you could sneak in…it is as much a film for adults as it is for children. ;)

Hi Nova
I love your blog – it looks so pretty and I’ve enjoyed reading some of your posts – will carry on reading more once I’ve written this comment (and done a bit of food shopping which I keep putting off!) So, the Muppet Movie?! I was also a kid in the 70′s and loved the Muppets – especially Miss Piggy, so I can’t wait to watch this new movie. I haven’t seen War Horse yet and that’s next on my list – but what is it lately with the tear-jerking films? I’m such a cry baby I don’t know if I’ll cope! x
